H.R. Q&A: Negotiating a Higher Salary

Q. I love my job but I really want to be paid more money. What should I do?

A. This is actually a common question many people have. Most companies have a formal review process where your manager will review your salary periodically. This is usually done once a year, but your company may review more or less frequently. You can consult your employee's handbook or speak with someone knowledgeable at your company to find out if such a policy exists.

If your company doesn't have a formal review policy, it is certainly appropriate for you to ask your manager to review your performance and your salary.

If you have had your review but are still unhappy with your pay, think about what you can do above and beyond your normal duties that would help your company achieve its objectives. You can then approach your manager and ask whether they would consider giving you a bonus if you are able to achieve that objective.
